I decided to research just how wide roads are for the Seconds grid. Now I could just race outside and measure the width of my street, but I felt there had to be some sort of International standards (or at least comparisons), otherwise vehicles built somewhere else wouldn't all fit on the roads when they were imported.
Anyway, I found DESIGN STANDARDS for URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE: 3 ROAD DESIGN (at http://www.tams.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0011/396857/ds03_roaddesign.pdf) but that was extremely dense reading! But, I was saved by Lane Widths on Urban Roads (see http://www.tams.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0011/396857/ds03_roaddesign.pdf) produced by the Bicycle Network. Surprised to find that the average lane is only 3.0 - 3.5m wide.
But you never know where useful information comes from. When I was looking at making an airport in a sim, I found a wealth of PDF documents online clearly showing standards for marking and lights, including military ones! Cool.

4m would probably work better especially if you want to parcel the roads
ReplyDeleteWell yes, it it would. That's for 1 lane. A decent sealed road would be at least 8 metres wide, and a highway with 2 lanes each way, 16 metres. None of the internal widths are over 3.8m, so 4's looking good. :)
