Etherpad sounds more like a bit of hardware, as in "damn, I stepped on the etherpad!" The big deal is that you can edit collaboratively online. I've never done that my self, but I think even with good software you'd need to the rest of the team reasonably well or there'd be a big falling out.

I used a similar service in my virtual world typewriter, but the service died This could be used in a virtual world via Media on a prim. That typewriter lets anyone in any Virtual World chat in real time.
