Well, I was going to apply that heatsink gell on the NUC nuc7i5bnh, just in case its resetting the other day was caused by overheating. I carefully unscrewed the bottom plat and found a hard drive, and the motheboard with SSD memory, but I couldn't find what looked like a CPU or the heatsink. D'OH! I've been downloading user manuals for a layout but so far no luck.
This must be what my father felt like when he opened up the car he'd bought to fix something, and discovered a computer instead.
There's two small screws, then pry it up. Look for a YouTube video on this.
ReplyDeleteWell I've peered at several Youtube videos now but none of them actually match with the insides on the NuC! I thought it might have been this one and until I saw it I was trying to access thingg from the bottom! But while the Nuc does indeed have the silver section surrounded by a dark cover, there doesn't eem to be any space for a heatsink and I can't seem to get to what's underneath!

You are close. Look for some screws inside. The motherboard has to be pried up gently with a flat blade inserted in one side. I remember two screws, could be more. Nothing else holds it in. Once the mobo is out, flip it over and it will be obvious what to remove - fan then heatsink.

thats probably it, or close. The 2.5" HDD pops off with a tug. The connector is tiny! a pair of pliers will get it.
ReplyDeleteI got that off, only to discover that there a NO SCREWS showing on this side - as circled in purple - which I can unscrew! I did get the top off earlier and there were 4 screws on that side, but the only thing those seemed to be holding in was the black plastic cover.
ReplyDeleteI've removed the top and those screws, but the main board is still stuck in the chassis. It appears to kept in position by 3 metal bands: one that goes across the front inside from corner to corner, and the other two in the opposing corners. Once again I'm not sure I can get it out without damaging it. Perhaps I can remove the top?

Ah, I've found an extra screw holding the board in, within the top right lilac circle in the previous image. However none of the micro Philips screwdrivers seem able to unscrew it, without destroying the head! I can't see any evidence of a second screw either, though perhaps it could be the red memory sticks. It's NOT under the ADATA.

ReplyDeleteLooks like the NUC has a tiny heatsink. Debbies has new heatsink compound in it but it is still running pretty hot . Stopped crashing with Assassins Creed though.
ReplyDeleteMy other NUC is running Linux just to compile code for night vision cameras, and so is pretty unstressed. I have a Skull Canyon NUC too, which is about twice the size and seems to have a better blower in it.
So there may be no point in trying to use the gel on it?
