I can see this in part as a sensible move in that Open Source software is often more reliable, and easier to fix when there are issues. Also, if we're talking some form of Linux based software, it's often more secure and less prone to viruses. I'm willing to bet that the big driving force here is in saving $$$.

Looks like you can do anything through a browser. This application will allow you to design 3D stuff and save/export that stuff as well.

I did a Google search of "Opensimulator robot" and found a DIFFERENT OpenSimulator! Seems it's no longer being developed, as evident from the last blog post where the developer says "Development of OpenSim has been suspected." Lots of suspicions around here!

Corewar, the program-survival game introduced by A. K. Dewdney in a 1984 Scientific American article, and still going strong with a semi-regular tournaments, has a bit of a backstory. Here we have Creeper & Reaper, a pair of autonomous replicants from 1971, which inspired Dewdney to his invention, and nearby we find Darwin from 1961 which has many similarities to Corewar. The two games are compared in this note from 1998:

For more on Darwin, including pointers to the last version, for a Z80 CP/M system, from 1985, see
