Having backed up the dodgy disk (with only one file that couldn't be copied), I'm now using CloneZilla to do a disk -> disk copy of of my system/boot disk.

Why do this? The replacement disk is 2 TB, whereas my original system drive is 1 TB, which is all used. By swapping them over I can then use the 1 TB drive to replace the drive I lost, which was full of support stuff like a music collection and utility programs that didn't need to be installed. What I backed up was less than 1 TB, so this should work well.

Or maybe I just like complicating things.
