While I was researching heliports for the SECONDS Webcomic, I found this document for VERTIPORTS - https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/advisory_circular/150-5390-3/150_5390_3.PDF. I'd never heard the term before but it seems they've been around for a while. The artwork in that document made me think of a Frank. R. Paul illustration.
The future's a bit like that I guess. You think something's coming soon but it's been around for years. Take flying cars and jet packs for example. Every so often you see some story in the media claiming that they're now here, when really both have been around in various forms for the last 50-60 years. It's just, like the electric light before Edison, they're not terribly practical, safe or affordable!
