I couldn't get back to sleep, so I had another look at salvaging the Studio PC stuff. Seems that the drive with the dodgy connection is only accessible with a cold boot.

I hadn't used the PC very much, so in this case that's been a good thing, because there's been less to recover. Was able to copy anything vaguely important.
