I just discovered that Friendica used BBCODE to format text! Gosh, showing it's origins, perhaps?

  1. I have no clue what "BBCODE" is, nor do I want to know, but I'm sure if I can ever get into Friendica, or any of it's stuff, that it will feel just as Linuxy to me then, as it does now. :)

  2. shawnkmaloney OSWRS I was thinking when using it how "old style" it looked. You can do stuff, but you don't get a mantelpiece of buttons to do it with. Instead you have to find the HELP PAGE first and read the instructions.

I know BBCODE from the 90s, when I used to be on Bulletin Boards and USE/NEWSGROUPS with a borrowed dial-up modem. Back then a text only browser like LYNX was my best bet because I had an ATARI XT PC2, an IBM clone that had amazing vEGA graphics (a 720×540 screen with 16 colours!). I think that was the last thing Atari made before they buried all those E.T. video games. Anyway instead of getting stuff like BOLD, you got colour instead! But you still needed the code to get that. Later in 2004 I came across it again when I was on LIVE JOURNAL and then you did get the formatting on the screen.

BBCODE's where all that HTML and XML and WTF coding comes from. Here's a sample of what it might look like. No shortcuts, you had to type it all yourself! :P

  3. There another one I've tried called Pluspora which runs something called DIASPORA. It's even more "plain" than the Friendica thing I've tried on ISurfSocial. Lots of typing codes in, but they have a link to the "markudown page guide". Hmmm. I'm there because Ed who runs a Retro Tech Community here has moved there. Nostalgia, I know, but it interests me, and I want to build retro computer tech props for Opensim.

But the Friendica and Diaspora things all run under "The Federation". I guess that's a Star Trek reference, and I'm a Trekker, but I also know of The Federation from an old TV series called Blake's 7. And that's entirely different!!!
