Chances are, if you had a Commodore machine in those days, you also were using GEOS!

Seriously, this article is a WANK. "SHOULD"? It ignores the fact that the new technologies which "ought" to replace these are still evolving, and also that fact that many only really work with a certain level of support.

Technology doesn't work that way! Just because you invent a car doesn't mean all horses should be shot. Rather, economics tends to decide which new technologies become more popular and which ones become less so. But often those earlier technologies still have a place, either in situations where the new technology would be costly to implement or use (e.g. no or few petrol stations, but lots of grass), or the older technologies become interesting or prestigious in and of themselves (e.g. vinyl records, wood prints, hand weaving).

No joy with Win10 update on the RecRoom PC.

No joy with Win10 update on the RecRoom PC. I had to download an ISO, burn that to a disk and boot to it. But that's the PC with the you-bewt  graphics card in it. A mysterious cursor would appear, at the to-left screen, which was vertical yellow and orange stripes!

I'll read up on turning the card off. Also, I've moved the Studio PC in next to the RecRoom one. Rather than run from one end of the house to the other all the time, it'll be a matter of swiveling my chair.

Well that was deflating. I did a restore point, and then thought "maybe I should check for updates before upgrading" and found that there was a pile waiting, but then none of them would download. So I thought "stuff it, just update to 10". However, seems the same issue is affect that as well.

Very - annoying.  Am running something called "fixit" from MS to sort this out but it takes ages.

OK, I'm not currently an active student, but as a post-grad I have my student email for life. Only it seems it got hacked, and was used to send out spam. When I logged on I kept seeing all these "Return to Sender" and "Delivery failed" messages and I thought that was me being spammed.

Anyway, I now have a new password but I won't be logging on until I use my malware scanners on my PCs to see if I have a key logger lurking about!

I've been having issues with an internal drive on the Studio PC. The drive has the Win7 NTFS  GRAPHICS (G:) and VIDEO (V:) partitions on it, and I'm still having issues backing them up. Accessing individual files doesn't seem to be an issue, but trying to copy them over to an external drive hangs the copy very quickly, and causes Win7 to have "hiccups" with "Not responding messages on other applications.  I tried booting to Linux Mint instead but Dolphin had issues mounting the drive. Last year I had similar issues accessing Illustrator files on G: and eventually I moved the exported PDF files and my documents / exegesis stuff to a server on my MEDIA PC. Everything points to a dying internal hard drive, and I'm no longer sure about what I can about this.

This morning when I tried to boot the PC, windows seemed to take forever to boot, and trying then to reboot to Linux Mint (either on the PC or off a live disk) seemed to hang as well. I've just got it to boot in Win7 (finally).  I did a search on the net about issues related to copying from internal to external drives and one forum suggested it's an issue with older Western Digital drives (which it is). I have managed to create new folders on that drive, but maybe it's contributing to the issues.

Next I'm going to try copying stuff from G: over the local network to some spare space on the Media disk (I replaced an internal drive in that a couple of weeks back and it gained me an extra 1TB). If that works it'll slow, but it will at least back them up. I HAVE to make an effort to recover my graphic novel. The last backup it seems was in 2012.

As I've suspected for a long time, my Media PC is not the only desktop I have with a failing drive. I downloaded the portable version of this program (important because it has no crapware bundled with it) and tested my Studio PC. Sure enough my Samsung 750 GB drive has been playing up.

I've known that one of them had been for a few years now. At the time I was working through the Masters and focussed on drawing a graphic novel using Clip Studio Paint and Illustrator. The PC would frustratingly "hold its breath" for excruciating long periods and have major issues accessing certain files (the . The dying drive has my Win Swap, Downloads and Projects partitions on it. The good news is that I can backup what's there on the external drives I have, and will probably replace it with a much BIGGER drive.
