WorldWind is a free, open source API for a virtual globe.

WorldWind is a free, open source API for a virtual globe. WorldWind allows developers to quickly and easily create interactive visualizations of 3D globe, map and geographical information. Organizations across the world use WorldWind to monitor weather patterns, visualize cities and terrain, track vehicle movement, analyze geospatial data, and educate people about the Earth.

Never heard of this before. It seems to have two things (at least) going for it, it's not Google (as much as I enjoy the use of their products), and it's by NASA.

  1. I think my computer would explode just trying to open up the program .. But when I went to uni they had this virtual space where people could draw trees on the terrain And they would come up on this big virtual map .. Was the biggest hit at the open day I reckon .

  2. I miss my university's virtual campus in Second Life. They had, flowing on a platform in mid-air a replica reconstruction of a Babylonian village! My brother's university has had a strong presence in Second Life as well, including an accurate recreation of parts of its Crawley campus.

  3. Though I think this is more like a virtual representation of the World as it is now. I tried their virtual Mars a few years back. It was great until Windows crashed!

  7. Mmm, I don't know. If I wasn't already working on my own stuff I'd consider it, because it'd be a good way for me to learn more skills in that.
