Years ago I was interested in it because it more or less "Mozilla for Music" in that it was free, open-source, and based on an addin system so that you could choose and pick what functionality you wanted without having to add all the extras. But back then it wasn't a mature bit of software. Seems to me that maybe it is now.

So, MusicBee seems the most likely candidate for my music player on my Win10 PCs. Perhaps a big factor in my trying it was that it was available on the Microsoft Store. Installed seamlessly and so far has run well. But also, I can also install it on what might now be "The Linux PC" in the Studio (the old Studio PC).

So I decided to look around for music players now I have the sound working on the RecRoom PC.

So I decided to look around for music players now I have the sound working on the RecRoom PC.

In the past I've used a variety of players including WinAmp, Foobar, Clementine, and most recently aTunes. The common denominator was the ability to have an icon/controls in the task bar (or work properly with the media keys on the keyboard), the ability to sort music files as I like, and customisation with notifications. Fairly straightforward. Listening to net radio was optional because I have a licensed copy of RadioSure (see http://www.radiosure.com/) for that.

First up I tried Groove Music. OK but nothing special. Then I tried Clementine. That was my preferred music player under Win7 but I started using aTunes instead because Clementine was having issues on my old Win7 PCs. I used Foobar 2000 for almost 8 years but it's for folk who like to mess around with code first and hack stuff to death. Anyway, Clementine worked, but kept throwing "Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in" error messages at me. That'd be distracting, and a quick search showed that there was no proper solution! Then I tried the first one on this list - Dopamine. It looked like it could be incredibly good, but after installing it it would crash instead of running, giving no explanation! So, I decided to try MusicBee.

The last time I looked at this is was some version before 1/0, and it was very buggy and S-L-O-W. This time around it runs smoothly. Of course my PCs now have 4x the ram they used to have, so that might have something to do with things, but I'm impressed with it this time around.

Well, moving the 4k monitor to the RecRoom PC was a bust. It seems that while I can get 1920 x 1080, it just blanks out for higher resolutions. Odd. And now Win10 seems to think that my sound is working, via the LG Monitor! I should actually check if it has speakers or not. There's two grills underneath, but I thought those were for cooling. No sound coming out.

However, I'm no worse off than I was yesterday. It's just a matter of research I suspect.

Update:
We have sound!

After I downloaded the PDF manual for the L24UD58-B, I realised that it had an audio jack in the back of the monitor. I plugged that in, no change. But then when I used to built in menu of the monitor I found that the default setting was low volume and muted. Sound works now, hurray!

Still haven't figured out the higher resolution yet, but that can wait. This monitor is still larger and has a crisper image than the previous one ever had!

After discovering a 2m HDMI to HDMI cable I'd forgotten I had, I discovered that I could plug my Media PC directly into the lounge room TV and have an extra desktop display! Ooh, might make watching some videos a lot easier, and running some programs (like the Second Life viewer) far easier to use (because of their tiny menu text size).

I wasn't able to do this easily under Win7, but with Win10 it's automatic!

Earlier today I sorted out the NEW Homegroup for the Win10 PCs. Until now I haven't had one, and that made working on Seconds (which is on the NUC) and other things difficult. Now that the Studio PC is effectively defunct, I'm move that off the best computer table I have there (given to me by the kind folk next door ages ago) and move the NUC to it.

I couldn't get back to sleep, so I had another look at salvaging the Studio PC stuff. Seems that the drive with the dodgy connection is only accessible with a cold boot.

I hadn't used the PC very much, so in this case that's been a good thing, because there's been less to recover. Was able to copy anything vaguely important.

The killer PC in the Studio strikes again!

The killer PC in the Studio strikes again!

I might not s\install Win 10 on my Studio PC. I booted it up, and once again there was an issue reading one of the drives. KDEPartition Manager under Mint wouldn't even read it. After about 10 minutes in Win 7 it suddenly appeared. Or rather one of the partitions did. I shall have to consult my (paper) notes about what was on that one. The thing is - this is the PC that through away the files for my graphic novel. It has a history of going nuts with at least one drive.

So maybe I'd be better recovering what I can and throwing the PC (minus drives) away.

No point in installing Windows 10 on it in that case. Most likely the problem's with something on the motherboard, because I've had the power supply replaced on that PC. Maybe I should just through the motherboard out and replace that? That will take research to see if it's worth it. Maybe the memory, case and power supply are all that's worth salvaging from it.

But I just can't rely on that PC for now. So I'll recover the files I can, put them on the RecRoom PC, and work from that.

No doubt this is all old news to a bazillion users of Win 10, but combined with setting up default saving locations to different partitions (see http://www.thewindowsclub.com/change-default-save-location-windows-10) this is pretty cool. Only I find that I need to set up those default save locations first, because for example, if I set Save new Music to my M: drive, it actually creates M:\laura as the default.

So, I'm continuing to backup the RecRoom PC today.

So, I'm continuing to backup the RecRoom PC today. I could have had it backing up overnight, but in my experience that's when something goes wrong.

Going to wipe both disk 0 and 2, which are both MBR. As it transpired, I had at least 800GB spare space on disk1, so that'll be the drive the Mint Distro goes on. I've been using the RecRoom PC as my main PC since I finished the masters. It didn't help having one of the Studio PC's drives dying, but I never really got back into the habit of using it again. But then I have a strategy of redundancy witn my PCs, which is why I'm only installing Win10 on one PC at a time. If any one goes down, I have others to use!

Also I discovered that program that no longer works on the Media PC, also no longer works on the RecRoom PC either. It was old kit and no longer being developed so its time has come. There may be others that don't as well, but hopefully my Adobe CS6 pack will.

So, finally!

So, finally!

Didn't go out for a dogwalk until mid morning. Instead, I just sat on the lounge-room couch and tried another install. And it seems to have worked!

Not sure what happened before but I suspect the install crashed before it completed, which would explain why it couldn't boot. This time I deleted the partitions the aborted install created and THIS TIME IT WORKED. Of course the bloody thing's taking forever to download and install updates, but I sort of expect that. Which is all a relief.

And why did I want to update in the first place? Well I knew that sooner or later the WIN7 installs I had to no longer be supported; and after playing on the NUC that arrived last year, I could see that as I was committed to certain Windows apps it made sense to update and make sure my Windows was legal.

Even so, I have two more PCs to update, but I'll wait until I finish re-installing stuff (like Thunderbird) to get the Media PC back up to spec. That might take a while, because I'll want to see if there are apps on the Win10 install that might work just as well.

The Win10 install saga continues.

The Win10 install saga continues.

I found this solution at the Microsoft community site. It suggested the issue here is that Win10 needed unallocated space on the drive, in order to do it's own thing in installing. Huh? And yet when I DELETED partition 1 and selected NEXT, it started a proper install!!!

It hasn't finished that install, yet. Will post an update when it does (or doesn't).

So the utility didn't work.

So the utility didn't work. I went to Gparted and wiped and reconstructed the drive as GPT, then created all the partitions in the right places and formats. Then I fiddled around with a second drive making space for an alt boot Linux install (further down the track). I have to go out for a bit and will do a fresh install of Win10 when I get home.

The ongoing saga, but this will save me time when I upgrade to Win10 on the other two PCs at home. It's all a learning curve. Even so, it was emotionally hard for me to wipe out the C: partition. But I have faith, and backups.

So, I have an appointment today at noon.

So, I have an appointment today at noon. But I've also backed up anything useful from the drive with Win7 on it. I'll try using gptgen-1.1 to convert the drive to GPT, and if that fails I'll just wipe the partition table and make the new one GPT using Gparted, and then install Win10.

That feels a bit like "brute force" to me, and I could just do that first, but using gptgen-1.1 is an effort to save time. Upgrading to Win 10 seems to take lots of that.

I need some feedback/advice

I need some feedback/advice

The install failed AGAIN, even after I turned off Anti-virus software. I booted to the USB disk and got to the which partition to install to and got THIS message. AHA! So, it looks like I will have to re-format that partition to GPT. However, I thought that GPT was the whole disk partition table format, not just for an individual partition. I could be wrong though. More research needed.

However, even if I DO need to redo the whole drive, I've already backed up the data partitions from the original drive, though I'd also need to backup two new partitions I created (one for general incoming files, the other for incoming software) because I'd already copied stuff over to them. So maybe I should just backup all the storage partitions again (groan), wipe the drive and start again! I might also save everything in C:/USER/.

*Feedback please!!!!

So, this morning, I should probably go through my apps on the Media PC and backup settings, where the app allows me to backup and restore them. Apps like Firefox (which I use much less now, but still good for watching catchup TV) and Thunderbird already have their default profiles moved to a separate partition. Apps like Firestorm and Scrivener, not so much. And I have a heap of games software on the G: drive, not on the Windows System drive at all. That could be interesting!

Either way, I ought to look at this as an opportunity to have a clean install and to reduce the "clutter" of apps I installed and probably used once and never again. Maybe. Continuity depends on the ability to retain passwords, links, short cuts and files where I need to, and I can do that by copying where necessary. But it's a job that needs a methodical approach, something that I used to be good at when I used to be employed.

The Media PC says it has updates for me, but I might just wait until 10's on it!

And after all that I've discovered that I can't save my Apps after all, because they were created on 7.

After most of the day working on this, I haven't been able to install Win10 and in the process of trying to fix that did something horrible to the MBR. And despite being able to boot to Win7 via using the Supergrub 2 and using EasyBCD to fix the MBR, a boot still gives a volume contains no Operating System message instead of booting properly. When I go through all the motions of using a Windows Repair disk to use BootRec /FixMbr and then a BootRec /FixBoot, I continue to get a Volume does not contain a recognisable file system error!

So, it's been a frustrating time of things. I dont think I'll do anything more today. It's too hot and I'm more likely to make mistakes and screw up more. And I'm wondering if maybe the best thing to do would be to FORMAT the C: drive and do a "clean install". I mean everything I have installed can be reinstalled if I need it as I have my rego codes and details. It's a lot of work. I'll have to think about that, and I guess also see if I can actually boot from the USB drive WIN10 comes on.

So, after researching the error on the Win install it seems the most common cause of that error is having set-up a dual Linux boot! Perhaps because when Win10 attempts to read the MBR, it can't read the format, hence the error message. So, I shall download, burn and try this. I seem to recall using it a few years back and it worked perfectly.

The usual routine is a) Install Windows first, then b) install Linux and a boot menu. This time around I might just do something different.

So, I finished the cloning, re-arranged the partitions and copied files over to their new homes. Then, I attempted to install Win10. So far I've got to this point TWICE. So why isn't there a I understand, try to install anyway option????

So, disk cloning complete, and tomorrow I shall attempt to install Win10 on the Media PC.

So, disk cloning complete, and tomorrow I shall attempt to install Win10 on the Media PC. Actually it was complete hours ago, but it seemed too late in the day to do anything that could get out of control if I wasn't careful.

Redo Backup and Recovery is a GPLv3 Perl script built with a GTK2+ interface designed in Glade. It is simply a front end to partclone, which performs the actual backup and restore. The live CD is built on Ubuntu to provide a graphical user interface and unmodified binaries of each program, but the script will run on any Linux platform that has the required programs installed.

I'm finally getting around to updating from Win7 to Win10. Before I do that on the Media PC I'm replacing my 1TB drive (with the Windows system in a partition on that) with a 2TB drive, and clone the existing disk image over to that. In the past I've used CLONEZILLA (see http://clonezilla.org/) but this time around it kept bombing out with bad sectors in the system partition. So I thought I'd try REDO this time around. So far so good.

I do like the fact that the the REDO live disk has a copy of GPARTED on it, which I can run after the clone's done, and add extra partitions and change the size of the existing ones (in particular, the Win sys partition). .

This was application recently updated.

This was application recently updated. It runs slowly on most of my PCs, and it it automatically installs to a C:\user\NAME\reallylongpath which you can't change.
