I've already left G+ groups that have equivalents on Facebook/MeWe and which I've joined. I'm wondering if perhaps I should consider looking for a replacement for Google Calendar? Part of the advantage in using it as my homepage in Firefox, is that I get a widget to other Google apps, and the G+ widget. If G+ is gone, then maybe it's time to find something else.

I've already replaced Google search with DuckDuckGo. It's ok for 95% of my searches, and I go to GoogleSearch for the last 5%.

I read (on a google translation of https://www.googlewatchblog.de/2019/01/das-ende-googleplus-google/) that this is the current schedule for phasing out G+

February 4: No new profiles, pages, communities, and events can be created.
February 4 & March 7: Google+ comments on Blogger will be removed on February 4, on external sites on March 7. All comments will be deleted on April 2nd. Google+ login button will not work in the coming weeks and will be partially replaced by the Google login.
Early March 2019: Google+ community owners and moderators will be able to download more data at the beginning of March. This data will include the author, the text, as well as the photos of all posts in the communities.
April 2: All Google+ accounts and pages will be closed and data will be deleted. All photos and videos related to Google+ will also be deleted. Photos and videos stored on Google Photos will not be deleted.

I guess I should start looking at archiving my collections and posts soon. I've already moved to MeWe (for the groups that moved there) and Friendica (ISurfSocial, but I can connect to anyone who's moved to THE FEDERATION) and posts from G+ currently "echo" - including this one - to ISurfSocial and Live Journal.

So I have my exit strategy in place, but it's also necessary to archive what's here. I've also left a few groups here on G+ because I'm already on their replacements in MeWe. There's no point in reviewing the same posts in each.

So it's the day after it was announced that G+ will be closing.

So it's the day after it was announced that G+ will be closing. I've joined a group that discusses how to migrate somewhere else, and already there are heaps of posts waiting for me to look at. But so far I'm not sold on anything I've looked at . I've tried diaspora which to me looks like LIVE JOURNAL from 11 years ago. There's something called WeMe but it looks geared towards phone use and I don't put social media on my phone - what with poor eyesight and encroaching arthritis.

The thing that gets to me is this - no matter what solution I pick I will lose some of the connections I've made on G+. That's inevitable because not everyone will go on to the choice I eventually make, if they bother at all. And that annoys the shit out of me. I don't particularly want to be on half a dozen social media platforms.

I started out using Live Journal in 2004 while I was doing a TAFE library course. I stuck with that for a long time. I originally got on Facebook to share a photo I'd taken at a student conference earlier in the year. But I found I couldn't cope with Facebook very well back then, and I'm now on the 3rd FB account. The reason I stayed was mostly because friends I knew from real life and Live Journal . And while I still have a Live Journal account, Facebook effectively killed it by being "the app that everyone was on".

I joined Google+ after a contact in Facebook mentioned they were thinking of moving to it. They didn't, but I liked the feature mix in G+ - communities that worked and were about my interests and past times, and collections which I could share and/or subscribe to. For me G+ has been a platform I can take my time with, one that wasn't really designed for desktops as an afterthought to smart phone usage. I guess as well that my usage of Facebook has been very different than my usage here Facebook is for day-to-day domestic stuff. Google+ has (mostly) been for my interests , passions, and past times.

I will be missing G+, whatever I do afterwards.

Otherwise, if you haven't used a collection, or #hashtags, old stuff can be had to find. My search term was "how deceptively easy" which was unlikely to show up elsewhere. ;)

And I thought more people will be interested in learning how to do it with greater success: 

1) This is how I find my old posts: search in G+ using your name and some of the terms you used in the post or comment you are trying to find.

2) Use "word1 word2" if you remember two words you used next to each other. If you cannot then just use word1 word2 without the " "

3) If you remember another plusser who posted or was tagged mentioned in the post or they made a comment to the post add their name to the search. 

4) Continue searching different words. Longer strings of possible words. 

5) Jaana Nyström suggested: Is it your own post? Then choose 'From you' in the dropdown after you have searched once.

6) Mark Traphagen in a post http://goo.gl/ZsTpH mentioned that if you remember the day and month of the post then add "23 May" 

If you cannot remember the day then just add the month. 

7) When you have searched click on the pause button. If you don't click pause posts will continue to scroll past. 

BTW: I am not good at adding #tags  but by adding it you may find your posts easier in the future. ;-)
