Yet another spontaneous power-down!

Yet another spontaneous power-down!!! Once again this happened while I was using FirestormOS x64 viewer with the Seconds grid. The other day I spent most of the day using the Singularity viewer doing exactly the same stuff and no power downs. My guess is still a driver issue with the graphics card.

I might try using Firestorm at a slightly lower graphics level, or just stick to using Singularity. I'm only laying roads and rails at this stage.

It would be so easy for me to think that working on the Seconds Grid might be "cursed". In the last week the grid was acting crazy for reasons that were not apparent. My suspicions were several scripted buoys were going nuts for some reason, because they were both physical and phantom, but that was never confirmed. Eventually the problem was tracked down to something happening in Urbania-East.

However this morning it ran (after a couple of glitches). It just ran. I thought "great, now to get on with the building" but twice now while I was logged on via Firestorm on the RecRoom PC, that PC just shut down with no warning. Um, but, but but....

In truth I've been having issues with all three PCs on the network since the last Windows 10 update. The NUC (where the grid lived) had been the least obvious because mostly I run the grid on it and otherwise mostly leave it alone. But the Media PC decided to re-show Cortana, and mysteriously would reset the keyboard options to US International, for no reason!!!! The RecRoom PC's most obvious glitch was that at times it would go to screen saver or a blank screen, and not come back. I couldn't get the sign-on screen to come back. I've researched this and tried various things and nothing has changed. Part of the issue is probably the fact that the RecRoom PC has a custom graphics card in it. And today it just turned itself off using the viewer.

There will be a fix, no doubt. The good thing is because it was only the PC that I was running the viewer, and not the one with running the grid server, so the builds were not lost. But this all takes time to sort out. Frustration.

Grrr, Windows update. Grrr, damn you Micro$oft!

With the end of of the Home Group, I've been using Libraries a lot more.

With the end of of the Home Group, I've been using Libraries a lot more. The libraries are still in Windows, but their visibility is set to "off" by default. It's easier to create a library with some location like \\LAS-WIN-MEDIA\NETWORKED\ and look it up when you need it. You can give the library a less abstract and more relevant name.

Networked drives on the other hand, are handier for old applications that were assumed to be working on a single PC. I like Win 10 - more convenient than Win 7!

So my Windows 10 April update finally (like a cyclone working it's way down a coast) hit my RecRoom PC. After it was all done up popped the Edge browser listing all the new goodies, and underneath was something called THE FEED.

Uh, say what now? I didn't ask for it, and I thought this was an Operating System, NOT a Social Media platform (though I concede, it could be both). Seems it's available as an app on the M$ Store, but really if I wanted it I would have already got it. I've hidden it for now, and as the only reason I use EDGE is when asking Win help questions from the task bar, I probably won't see it again.

This article explains how to get rid of it "proper like", and no doubt will be useful.

Seems you can still share, but to specific apps???? It explains later... ...to share files with people in your workgroup or domain, select the file or folder you want to share, go to the Share tab, and then in the Share with section select Specific people. We'll see how this works soon.

As much as I'm enjoying using Win10, some things seem dreadful, like the updated calculator.

As much as I'm enjoying using Win10, some things seem dreadful, like the updated calculator. It has quite a number functions and conversions available, but with my 125% font size it covers too much screen real estate, and so far as I can tell, it doesn't have a tape where you can see the previous figures. Apparently though, you can still get the Calculator from Win 7 and 8.

Well that was a mini-adventure.

Well that was a mini-adventure. I found that it was far easier to put the RecRoom PC to "Sleep"than to shut it down. I tried the same thing with the Media PC, and couldn't get it to wake up!!!

I tried booting it several times but the monitor stayed blank! Finally I pressed the power button for more than 5 seconds until it was off, and unplugged it for 30 minutes. Plugged it back in and booted and it came back. I guess the older computer kit doesn't always work as it should. Won't do that again!!

Years ago I was interested in it because it more or less "Mozilla for Music" in that it was free, open-source, and based on an addin system so that you could choose and pick what functionality you wanted without having to add all the extras. But back then it wasn't a mature bit of software. Seems to me that maybe it is now.

So, MusicBee seems the most likely candidate for my music player on my Win10 PCs. Perhaps a big factor in my trying it was that it was available on the Microsoft Store. Installed seamlessly and so far has run well. But also, I can also install it on what might now be "The Linux PC" in the Studio (the old Studio PC).

After discovering a 2m HDMI to HDMI cable I'd forgotten I had, I discovered that I could plug my Media PC directly into the lounge room TV and have an extra desktop display! Ooh, might make watching some videos a lot easier, and running some programs (like the Second Life viewer) far easier to use (because of their tiny menu text size).

I wasn't able to do this easily under Win7, but with Win10 it's automatic!

Earlier today I sorted out the NEW Homegroup for the Win10 PCs. Until now I haven't had one, and that made working on Seconds (which is on the NUC) and other things difficult. Now that the Studio PC is effectively defunct, I'm move that off the best computer table I have there (given to me by the kind folk next door ages ago) and move the NUC to it.

No doubt this is all old news to a bazillion users of Win 10, but combined with setting up default saving locations...

No doubt this is all old news to a bazillion users of Win 10, but combined with setting up default saving locations to different partitions (see http://www.thewindowsclub.com/change-default-save-location-windows-10) this is pretty cool. Only I find that I need to set up those default save locations first, because for example, if I set Save new Music to my M: drive, it actually creates M:\laura as the default.
